WATERTOWN — Frank P. Scalo Sr., 75, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, after a courageous battle with COVID-19. He was the loving widower of Mary Scalo.
Frank’s family believes that their mother was waiting for him at the gates of heaven to welcome him into her arms once again after a 17-year wait. Frank was born in Waterbury on Dec. 30, 1944, the cherished son of Pasquale and Lucy Scalo. He graduated from Kaynor Regional Technical School and met his beloved Mary while in high school. Mary’s friends would always tease her that she should come to the game because they were playing Elvis’ team since they thought Frank resembled Elvis.
After high school, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country for several years. Following his military service, Frank married Mary on May 28, 1966. Frank worked for over 55 years in construction under Local 24 at both Megin Construction and O&G Industries, who were fortunate to have him in charge of many job sites that required his keen eye for quality work and his careful attention to detail.
Frank was a faithful communicant of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
Left to cherish Frank’s memory, and to follow his lifelong example of love, generosity and kindness are his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Fatos Meka of Watertown, with whom he resided, his son, Frank Scalo Jr. of Watertown, along with the absolute loves of his life, his grandchildren, Ty, Nicolette and Derek Meka and Joshua and Jacob Scalo. “Pop,” as he was known to them, as well as all of their friends, was their biggest fan and supported them in every one of their endeavors.
Frank also leaves his beautiful sisters, JoAnn Genovese and Patricia Sandulli (Anthony); his sister-in-law, Jacqueline Marticello; his cousins, but also his best friends, Greg and Debbie Veneziano; the most amazing nieces and nephews, especially his godson, Billy Genovese Jr., who was his construction protégé. He was predeceased by his favorite brothers-in-law, William Genovese Sr., Andrew Marticello and Joseph Marticello.
Frank’s family would like to thank the dedicated, caring staff, especially the nurses, in the ICU at Saint Mary’s Hospital who answered Laura’s calls and allowed for numerous FaceTime visits. You are true heroes to go to work each day knowing that many patients in your care will likely not survive. We are grateful for your work ethic.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all services are private. The family hopes you can join them in the near future at a “celebration of life” for their wonderful father and grandfather.
