Our beloved family matriarch, Maria R. Hernandez, passed away on February 23, 2025, at the age of 83. She spent her last days surrounded by her loving family and closest friends. Born on October 14, 1941, in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, Maria was a woman of immense strength, kindness, and warmth, whose presence was a guiding light for all who knew her.

Maria dedicated over 20 years of her life working at Waterbury Neck Wear before retiring. Outside of work, she was full of life and passion. An avid bowler, Maria participated in many teams throughout the years, she also enjoyed playing darts, found joy in dancing, and cooked the most amazing foods. Maria and her husband hosted the most unforgettable Christmas and New Year’s celebrations bringing family and friends together year after year.

Above all, Maria touched countless lives with her generosity and compassion, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience that will live on in the hearts of her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her infectious laugh could fill a room with joy and laughter.

Maria is survived by her husband of 48 years, Eliu Hernandez, her four children, Luis Toledo, Digna E. Toledo, Lucinda Toledo, and Luz Maria Toledo, her children’s half-siblings and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her two step-children; her 25+ grandchildren, including Adonis J. Aponte, Jose Diaz, Marisol Diaz, Ricardo Toledo, Daniel Estrada, and Victor Luis Diaz; as well as over 20 great-grandchildren and over 3 great-great-grandchildren. Maria was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Rosa Morales and Julio Aponte, and her dear siblings, Pedro Luis, Juana Gaud, and Juan Aponte.

Maria’s life will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Colonial Funeral Home located at 270 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT where family and friends will gather to honor her incredible life, legacy, and memory.
